How many photos belong in a slideshow?

Enough to tell the story. Few enough to let people see it. Start with your available running time, then work backward to a photo count.

By the SkyAlbum team

The simple formula

Subtract opening and closing title time from the total duration, then divide by your seconds per photo. For a three-minute video with ten seconds of titles and five seconds per photo: (180 − 10) ÷ 5 = 34 photos.

Three examples at five seconds per photo

  • Two minutes, with ten seconds of titles: 22 photos.
  • Three minutes, with ten seconds of titles: 34 photos.
  • Five minutes, with ten seconds of titles: 58 photos.

Use the examples as a first draft

Not every photograph needs the same duration. A simple detail can register quickly, but a group photograph or a caption may need a longer hold. Once the basic sequence works, adjust individual images and check the new total.

Transitions can change the result

Some editors overlap adjacent photos during a crossfade. Others include transitions within a photo’s assigned duration or add them to the timeline. The arithmetic above counts display time and titles only. Confirm the runtime in your editor after adding transitions.

Cut repetition before cutting time

If the slideshow feels long, look for photos that repeat the same information. Three similar portraits usually do less for the story than one portrait followed by a detail and a wider scene. Removing weaker frames lets you keep a comfortable pace for the photographs that remain.

Match the audience and occasion

A short trip recap shared in a message should get to the point quickly. A family slideshow watched together can make more room for familiar faces and conversation. There is no universal ideal length; choose a first draft and watch it in the same setting your audience will.

Check the final viewing experience

Watch the exported file without pausing. If you find yourself wanting to rewind a caption, extend that slide or shorten the text. If you want to skip ahead, remove repeated moments. Use the free slideshow calculator to try different counts before editing.
